Grange Community College students win competition sponsored by Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies

Well done to all those first year boys and girls who entered the national competition to name one of the 17 seismometers that will be deployed off the North Atlantic Ocean. There were some fabulous names.

Winning entrants were today celebrated at morning assembly. The following first year students, Reggie, Kinga, Shaniece  & Ellie were presented with certificates and prizes for their winning entry ‘GILL’.

Pictured with the students are Ms McMahon their tutor and Mr Nolan, first year Science teacher presenting them with their prizes.

Below is a picture of one of the seismometers.

A seismometer is a device that uses sound to detail the ocean floor, measuring seismic disturbances such as tectonic plate movement and earthquakes. The school will be holding a video conference in the next few weeks with the scientists whose job is to monitor the ocean floor. Students will have the opportunity to track their seismometer ‘GILL’.
