Career Guidance

Ms Biggs

Guidance-Counsellor

Hi, Im Ms Biggs the school’s Guidance Counsellor.  An important part of my job, especially at this time of year, is helping students with applications to further and higher education. This is an exciting time of year for leaving cert students who are busy researching and applying for courses.

As a parent please encourage your son or daughter to keep asking questions – no question is too basic or silly to ask. 6th year students are my VIPs and I am always glad to see them at my door!

Further education or FE, is a great option for many students and allows them to spend a year gaining employment skills, exploring a course/career area or working towards a course in Higher Education (Universities and ITs). The majority of these courses are run by the Education Training Boards and application is made directly to the FE college.

Higher education courses are applied to through the CAO system via the website www.CAO.ie. To avail of the early application fee of €25, applications must be made before 20th January 2015. Students have been provided with CAO booklets and are busy researching their applications at the moment.

Students applying to CAO may also be eligible to apply to the HEAR scheme or the DARE scheme. An introduction to the HEAR programme is available below.
This video features our link person in DCU – Susan Hawkins who provides support and opportunities to many of our students though the access programmes.
