Leaving Certificate
Syllabus
Science is divided into 3 separate subjects for Leaving Certificate – Physics, Chemistry, Biology.
The major topics for leaving certificate chemistry are:
- Atomic structure
- Volumetric analysis
- Organic chemistry
- Water chemistry
- Reaction mechanisms
Experimental investigations are an essential part of the leaving certificate course. Each student must complete at least 28 experiments over the duration of the course.
Experimental work is examined as part of the leaving cert exam and forms the basis for a minimum of three questions on the exam paper.
Good Science Students have:
- A curiosity about the world around them
- A good understanding of Junior Cert Science at the higher level
- An appreciation of the scientific method (experiments, analysis, conclusions)
- A student would be expected to have a reasonable level of Junior Cert Maths, either at higher or ordinary level.
- An ability to write clearly
- An eye for detail
Note
Chemistry is a requirement for some science and medical courses.
Recent observations from journalists writing about careers have suggested that the Irish Economy is experiencing a shortage of people with Chemistry skills.

There are eleven questions in total on the exam paper, each carrying fifty marks.
