Student Leadership Programme

Student leadership is a vital part of life in Grange Community College. It gives students a meaningful voice in shaping the school and ensures that the views of the wider student body are reflected in school policies and practices. We encourage all students to lead with pride, respect, and responsibility, both in formal roles and in everyday school life. This leadership is guided by our Head Boy and Head Girl, Prefect team, and Student Council, who act as role models and representatives for their peers.

We strongly believe that practical pupil participation is at the heart of our Student Leadership programmes. Students play an active role in contributing ideas, supporting school initiatives, and helping to build a positive, inclusive community. Our leadership programmes are central to the running of the school and help develop confident, responsible young leaders.

Student Council

The Student Council at Grange Community College is a vital and dynamic part of school life. Made up of dedicated students from across all year groups — from incoming first years to experienced sixth years — the council represents the diverse voices of the student body.

Their role is to advocate for students, ensuring that ideas, concerns, and suggestions are heard. Council members regularly meet with senior management, providing a strong and constructive link between students and school leadership. Through these meetings, they play an important role in shaping decisions and contributing to a positive school environment.

Beyond representation, the Student Council is actively involved in the growth and development of the college. They organise and support initiatives that enhance school life, while also leading meaningful charity fundraisers for causes that matter deeply to the student body and wider community.

Head Boy & Head Girl

The roles of Head Boy and Head Girl are key leadership positions in Grange Community College. Students are selected through an application and interview process, where candidates present their ideas for developing the school and contributing to policy and daily school life.

The successful candidates take on additional leadership responsibilities, representing the student body and working closely with school management. They provide valuable student voice and help shape a positive school environment. As part of their role they are expected to:

  • Represent students at Parent events and wider school & community events

  • Action key projects to improve the school experience for all

  • Inform policy development through student voice

  • Organise and support the team of school prefects.

  • Be a point of contact for students who are having issues at school.

  • Be understanding and caring towards the younger students.

Prefects

Grange Community College prefects are students who are chosen to be given extra responsibilities in the school. Following a rigorous selection process each year, a select group of our senior students are chosen as the leaders of our student body. They are identified due to their leadership qualities.
Prefects are expected to:

  • Support and mentor younger students with a higher focus on 1st years. Every 1st year group is assigned a specific prefect that will work closely with them.

  • Represent the student body.

  • Represent the school externally at school events.

  • Assist with the three pillars of positive expectations in the school. Eg. Reminding younger students of their responsibilities at lunch time.

  • Support and help staff whenever needed.

  • Carry out important functions in the school when requested. Eg. Assist with guest speakers or parent’s evenings.
