Student Supports & Guidance

At Grange Community College, student wellbeing is central to all that we do. We are dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where every student is known, valued, and encouraged to succeed both personally and academically. A strong network of pastoral support is available through Class Tutors, Year Heads, the Care Team, the Guidance Team, and subject teachers

GCC Class Tutors & Year Heads

Each student is supported by a dedicated Class Tutor, who serves as their first point of contact on a daily basis. Students meet with their tutor every morning for a 12-minute tutorial. During this time, tutors take attendance, share important school information and upcoming events, and check in with students’ wellbeing.

The role of the Year Head is to support the academic progress, wellbeing, and overall development of students within their year group. They work closely with Class Tutors, subject teachers, and the wider pastoral team to monitor attendance, behaviour, and achievement, while also acting as a key point of contact for students and parents.

GCC Care Team

Our Care Team works collaboratively to ensure that students receive the appropriate level of care and support throughout their time in the school. This team monitors student wellbeing and responds sensitively to any emerging needs, ensuring that every student feels supported and included.

GCC Guidance Team

The Guidance Team provides additional support to students as they navigate important aspects of their personal, educational, and career development. Their role is to assist students in making informed decisions about their futures and to support them during key stages of their school journey.

The Objectives of the Guidance Programme at GCC are:

  • To help students develop an awareness and acceptance of their strengths, talents and abilities.

  • To facilitate students in identifying and exploring opportunities.

  • To enable students to grow in independence and take responsibility for themselves.

  • To help students make informed choices about their lives and to follow through on these choices.

  • To assist students during the various transitions in their lives.

The Guidance Counsellor also provides a number of other services to students during their time in Grange Community College, which include but are not limited to:

  • School Counselling: Helping students to explore their thoughts and feelings, and the choices open to them; giving care and support to students learning to cope with the many aspects of growing up and at moments of personal crises.

  • Life Skills: All first year students are provided with three modules of life skills throughout first year - the guidance counsellor is one of three teachers delivering this programme, delving into topics such as Managing My Thinking, Staying Well and Dealing With Loss.

Assessment & Student Tracking

At Grange Community College, we use a range of assessment data to monitor and support student progress, ensuring every student is equipped to reach their full potential. This includes CAT4 psychometric testing, the Pupil Attitudes to Self and School (PASS) survey, and Interest Inventories and Work Values tests, which provide valuable insights into students’ strengths, areas for support, and future pathways.

This information supports subject teachers, Year Heads, and the Guidance Team in tracking progress through school and state assessments, and in putting appropriate academic supports in place where needed.
